How to Know If the Garbage Disposal Needs Replacement
A garbage disposal is one of the many modern conveniences of our homes that is often taken for granted. Only when it malfunctions or breaks down do we realize the value of its working condition. Most of the time, issues with the garbage disposal can be resolve with a quick fix or part replacement. Other times, it is best to replace the whole unit. So, how do you know if you need garbage disposal replacement or repair? Your friends at Rooter Hero plumbing are here to help. Here are some signs that it might be time to replace your garbage disposal.
Not Turning on At All
Let’s start with the most obvious signs and work our way to the subtle ones. A serious red flag is a garbage disposal that does not turn on at all. But don’t panic if your garbage disposal is not powering on. First make sure the power cord is firmly connected. Try pushing the reset button on the bottom of the unit. Finally, check the circuit breaker in the electrical panel and reset the respective circuit breaker.
If these troubleshooting methods don’t give you a response, then it might be that the electrical components of the garbage disposal are damaged. There is a good chance you will need a replacement.
A Leaking Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposals can leak from a few places, and the severity of the leak depends on the location. For example, leaks from around the top of the unit are less problematic as they often indicate a damaged flange or putty seal. These parts can be easily replaced.
Leaks near the bottom of the unit, however, are much more serious as they point to damage within the unit. It might be a crack to the unit or a damaged seal. Sure, you may be able to repair the damage, but the cost is not going to be worth it. It is usually more cost effective to get the unit replaced.
It’s natural for foods, fibrous foods especially, to get jammed in the garbage disposal every now and then. Generally, a quick plunging should get the clog resolved. But if the garbage disposal is frequently clogging then it might be that the blades are getting dull or the unit is undersized for your household. You want to get a unit that can handle your household’s needs.
You might accidentally drop something like a teaspoon in the garbage disposal and notice the loud sound the unit makes because of it. However, if you reach into the unit and cannot find anything but the unit is still making sounds, then it may be that the unit’s components are misaligned. Sometimes these parts can be adjusted, but you might be better off getting a replacement garbage disposal.
